Why Driveways Fail in the West of Ireland (And How We Build Them to Last)
The secret to a tarmacadam or block paving driveway that lasts 25+ years is not what you see on the surfaceβit is what lies beneath. In wet West of Ireland soils, cheap contractors skim 50mm of gravel over soft clay. Within two years, heavy cars cause wheel tire ruts, puddles accumulate, and the edges collapse completely.
Elevate Roofing & Building engineers driveways from the sub-grade up. We dig down 200β250mm, lay heavy-duty non-woven geotextile membrane to prevent soft clay pumping, and compact certified Clause 804 crushed stone in vibrating passes before any asphalt or paving is laid:
- Hot-Rolled Tarmacadam & Asphalt: We lay a 50mm heavy base binder course followed by a high-density 30mm Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) or 6mm/10mm wearing course, rolled hot to create a seamless, jet-black water-shedding surface.
- Interlocking Block Paving: High-specification 50mm and 60mm driveway pavers from Kilsaran and Roadstone laid on sharp grit sand with vibrating plate compaction and kiln-dried silica sand jointing.
- Decorative Cobble & Granite Borders: Contrasting soldier-course borders, charcoal edging ribbons, and circular turning medallions that add bespoke elegance.
- Integrated Aco Drainage Channels: Compliant with SUDS rainwater regulations, capturing surface runoff at the property boundary so water never pools against your garage or enters public roads.
What Our Driveway Service Includes
Hot-Rolled SMA Asphalt
Commercial-grade bitumen-rich wearing course that resists power-steering scuffing, oil drips, and winter freeze-thaw cycles.
Interlocking Block Paving
Premium Kilsaran and Roadstone concrete paving blocks available in cobble, charcoal, rustic heather, and brindle patterns.
150β200mm Heavy Sub-Base
Certified Clause 804 crushed limestone compacted in layers with heavy twin-drum rollers to eliminate sinkage.
Geotextile Ground Membrane
Industrial woven polypropylene Terram fabric installed beneath sub-base to prevent soft Leitrim clay from contaminating hardcore.
Contrasting Brick Borders
Soldier-course brick edging and granite cobble setts laid on concrete haunching to contain the driveway edges cleanly.
Aco Channels & Soakaways
Heelguard linear drainage channels across entrance thresholds piped into underground geocellular soakaway crates.
Our 4-Stage Driveway Installation Process
Excavation & Geotextile Ground Prep
We excavate existing soil or worn tarmac to a uniform depth of 200β250mm, establish laser fall levels, and roll out heavy Terram membrane.
Clause 804 Sub-Base & Roller Compaction
We deliver and spread certified quarry Clause 804 stone in 75mm lifts, consolidating it with a 2-tonne vibrating roller to maximum density.
Kerbing, Drainage & Border Restraints
All perimeter kerbs, granite cobble borders, and Aco drainage channels are bedded and back-haunched in wet C20/25 concrete.
Hot Asphalt Laying or Block Placement
We lay base and surface tarmacadam at 160Β°C with heavy compaction, or screed sharp sand and lay precision interlocking block paving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Tarmacadam consists of crushed stone coated in tar or bitumen. Asphalt (particularly modern Stone Mastic Asphalt - SMA) contains higher bitumen content, specialized polymer binders, and fine sand fillers. SMA provides a smoother, denser, and more durable surface that resists power-steering scuffs and heavy vehicle tire wear far better than basic open-graded tarmac.
In the wet clay conditions of Leitrim, Sligo, and Roscommon, a residential driveway sub-base must be a minimum of 150mm (6 inches) of compacted Clause 804 hardcore over geotextile membrane. For commercial yards or driveways accommodating heating oil tankers, we install 200mm+ sub-bases.
Rutting occurs when the laying sand layer is too thick (over 50mm) or when the sub-base is inadequate. We keep our laying sand to a strict 30mm thickness over an immovable, mechanically compacted 150mm Clause 804 foundation, ensuring the blocks interlock through joint friction without shifting under vehicle weight.
Yes. Gravel drives migrate into lawns, kick up dust in summer, and harbor stubborn weeds. We excavate the loose pea gravel, inspect the underlying ground, re-grade falls, add fresh hardcore, and lay a pristine tarmacadam or block paved driveway.
