The Structural Foundation for Durable Driveways & Entrances
Many contractors treat kerbing as an afterthought, dry-laying units on thin sand or weak mortar. When heavy commercial delivery vans, heating oil trucks, or family SUVs clip the driveway edge, unhaunched kerbs tilt outward, allowing the tarmac or paving foundation to wash away in heavy rain.
At Elevate Roofing & Building, every single kerb is treated as a structural retaining wall. We dig below the frost line, pour a continuous minimum 100mm–150mm bed of C20/25 readymix concrete, and pour a heavy back-haunch up to two-thirds of the kerb height:
- Precast Concrete Splayed & Half-Battered Kerbs: High-density Roadstone and Kilsaran certified kerbs engineered for heavy vehicular traffic, sharp turning radii, and road edges.
- Domestic Bullnose & Flat Edging: Sleek 50mm and 63mm rounded bullnose kerbs designed for flower bed containment, lawn borders, and pedestrian garden walkways.
- Natural Granite Sets & Cobble Edges: Hand-dressed silver and charcoal granite cobbles laid on wet mortar to provide a timeless, luxury finish framing tarmac and resin driveways.
- Dropped Vehicle Kerbs & Ramp Transitions: Council-compliant dropped kerb crossings and taper quadrants for seamless transitions between public roads and private entrances.
What Our Kerbing & Edging Service Includes
Precast Concrete Kerbs
Standard 125x255mm half-battered, splayed, and bullnose profile kerbs compliant with Irish National Road Authority standards.
Solid C20/25 Haunching
Poured structural concrete bedding and 150mm thick rear haunching to resist repeated tire impacts and lateral loads.
Natural Granite Cobbles
High-end hand-split silver and rustic gold granite setts offering unmatched visual contrast against dark tarmacadam.
Laser-Straight Alignment
Stringline and optical laser guidance ensuring razor-sharp lines on long runs and flawless sweeping circular radii.
Dropped Vehicle Crossings
Ramped entrance quadrants and dropped kerbs facilitating smooth, bump-free access for low-clearance vehicles.
Driveway Sub-Base Lock
Acts as an immovable edge restraint preventing tarmac spreading or paving blocks from migrating sideways.
Our 4-Stage Kerbing Installation Process
Ground Survey & Stringline Geometry
We mark out driveway perimeters, calculate falls, and secure optical laser-checked stringlines for perfect line and level.
Trench Excavation & Sub-Base Prep
Our mini-digger excavates clean perimeter trenches, followed by mechanical compaction of certified Clause 804 hardcore.
Concrete Bedding & Unit Placement
We mix and pour semi-dry C20/25 concrete bedding. Kerb units are malleted into position with exact 2-3mm expansion joints.
Full Concrete Haunching & Curing
A heavy structural triangular haunch is poured up the backside of the kerbs, smoothed off, and allowed to cure to full rock-solid strength.
Frequently Asked Questions
A driveway kerb without rear haunching will shift the very first time a vehicle wheel brushes against it. The concrete haunch acts as a buttress that absorbs lateral impact forces, locks the edge of the sub-base, and stops asphalt or paving blocks from disintegrating at the borders.
For modern homes, precast concrete 50mm bullnose or charcoal flat-top kerbs provide a crisp minimalist frame. For traditional countryside residences or stone-built houses, hand-split natural silver granite cobbles or rustic limestone sets add substantial prestige and character.
Yes. We use radius kerbs (specifically pre-cast curved units from 1-meter to 12-meter radius) or cut-matched granite sets to create sweeping driveway entrances, roundabout circles, and curving flowerbed islands without unsightly faceted angles.
We allow the structural concrete bedding and backing haunch to cure for a minimum of 48 to 72 hours before laying heavy asphalt or running vehicle traffic across dropped crossing sections.
